This ALL seemed to start when I was away onmy trip (of course). A bad storm blew through and my wife lost internet connection. But let me back up here and give you a bit of history on my stuff here.
Several months ago my old router (a Linksys WRT54G) went belly up. So I decided to buy a new Router as the old one was several years old. I bought a Linksys WRT610N. This offered a step up in price and features. I.e. I could hook up an external HD for backup. More on that later. I have internet service through Comcast Cable. I run, as my main computer a 63 bit I7 920 with 6 gigs of memory and a GTX 295 dual processor video card. I ran my printer through my old router for network printing. Worked fine under my old router but not under my new one.
Back to my story. I came back and tried in vain to get my internet working again. Even connecting the main computer directly did not work. Called up Comcast on 27 July and they finally helped me get back on the internet by connecting my computer straight to the modem. But it would not work via the router. Router saw the computer fine, but not the modem. Later that day after shutting down the computer and then restarting it, I again had NO connection to the internet.
Some fiddling with things, of which I do not remember what I did, I had internet again. Today, 28 July, I started the computer and again had no internet connection. I fiddled but to no evail this time. I called Comast, and they finally got me back up. But now for some reason, everything is slow and sluggish with regards to internet connection. Response in forums is delayed, in game I got kicked for Battle eye not being able to update. And ping in other internet games start fine then climb to the rediculuse. I.e. US server I start with 54 ping and climb to 300 real quick. In Arma on our server I get delays trying to get in vehicles. I sropped a wreck on to the wreck pad and first it disappeared into the ground, then a second or two later it popped out on the ground into the air neaxt to me . Then back to the ground and bounced back up again before settleing on the ground.
At first I thought this was a server issue but now I'm wondering if it's me.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. |

I'd get back in touch with Comcast. did they have you reset your cable modem and router and all that jazz? |

Follow these instructions before you contact comcast. Make sure you do everything in order.
1. Turn of computer, router, and modem
2. Unplug router and modem for 1-2 min
3. Plug in modem and turn on, wait for all green lights etc.
4. Plug in router and turn on, wait for all green lights etc.
5. Power on computer and test internet.
If this doesn't work, call comcast. |

Have you tried the internet on the wife's computer directly to the internet? If yes, are the speeds fine? If no, why not? Without the router you have narrowed the problem to your computer or your ISP connection. If you hook hers up it may help to narrow it to your machine or the ISP even more.
You can try uninstalling the network drivers. Vista and Win7 will have the drivers locally, while in xp you will need to have them on file before deleting them if possible. None the less the whole process should take less than two minutes. Then you know your drivers are good.
Here is the process
Push the Windows key + R (to start the Run box)
Type: devmgmt.msc (loads device manager directly)
Expand "Network Adapters"
Right click on your network adapter and select "Uninstall"
Follow any processes is prompted to confirm uninstall
When completed select the Action tab and "Scan for Hardware changes"
Follow prompts to confirm install
reboot
try direct connection to isp with your main rig
If this fails it may be a dns issue at the isp. The easy work around is to use open an open DNS. I usually use Google's for testing at work.
How to assign static DNS while using DHCP on Modem
Window's key + R
ncpa.cpl
right click on proper network adapter and select "properties"
double left click on "IPv4"
leave obtain IP alone
select use the following DNS server address
preffered: 8.8.8.8
Alt: 8.8.4.4
OK
OK
Right click on adapter again and disable/re-enable
try internet again
Let me know how it goes |

In IP4 the IP address is set to automatic in both upper and lower areas. |

I did the first part of your suggestion FBC and got back on and it seemed to run much smoother. However after I shut down the computer and later restarted it I had NO internet connection. I repeated your first tip and came back online. It seemed to run fine after that. This was ALL yesterday. Today my grandduagter turned it on and she got on her facebook on the internet via the small Pr-enterface my mothrboard provides. In other words she did not go to the desktop.
I took over and proceeded down to the regular desktop where I was met by NO connectivity to the internet once again. I went to the Sharing center (windows 7) and saw that once again, on it's on, I had not on connection but two set up. Number one was "Network 3 .... Home network. The second below it was "Unidentified Network ...... Public network. Both not connected. This time instead of following your first suggestion I deleted the network and then, some how, restablished only one, the "Network 3 .... Home Network and suddently I was back online again.
Something is obviously screwy here. Should I proceed onto your second suggestion? And why would itcontinue to make a second network on it's on? One wired and one wireless?
Also Comcast provided me with a free Routere+postage. A Netgear "Wireless-N 150 Router WNR 1000" which I have not set up yet. Camo Ihaven't tried your suggestion yet. But may before installing this. I guess it's just that when you have it working (the internet) you hate to screw it up by tinkering with it. But it has to be to get it right finally. |

FBC to add to the strangeness When I got home today My granddaughter got to the lap top and got on the internet first. With NO trouble I might add. I went and crancked up mine about 20 minutes later and was NOT connected. I checked on her and she was still connected. I used your first tip of using "devmgmt.msc" and, as usual, it rconnected me.
And as another side note, this morning when I turned of the computer it had Network 5 (up from 3) and Unidentified Network/Public Network. Anyway before I used your tip. After reinstall I had only one Network but it was a Public Network. So I changed it to Home as I do not intend to share with the neighbors.
Two quick questions. Why does the network keep increasing, network 3 to Network 5 (with NO 4 that I know of. And lastly do you think it might be my NIC card going out? |

The series of "network 1,2,3,4,5,6, ect" will occur for a few different reasons. If your connected directly to the modem and the IP address changes it will jump a network number. The same will happen if you change routers several times. While this is nothing to worry about it does offer some insight sometimes.
As your dynamic IP on the modem connects to your ISP's DHCP server then the number will increase. If you have a router in place with a name of the network, or domain but you still get a series of "Network 1,2,3,4..." numbers that would point me to a DHCP problem. I'm guessing you hooked the router up to the modem witch allowed your laptop to connect to wireless? Keep with the Private Home setting in the sharing center.
With your new router you could set up a static IP on your NIC to bypass DHCP. I would guess the gateway for that device is 192.168.1.1
So in IPV4 your settings would look something like this.
IP: 192.168.1.150
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
optional to carry the Google dns server
DNS1: 8.8.8.8
DNS2: 8.8.4.4 |

Before I do anything to make my life less barrable, let me just be clrea here. I still have to dump (uninstall) the NIC everytime I turn on my main (desktop) computer. Then scan, as you suggested for "New Hardware". Works everytime but is becoming tedious.
The router is set up to get it's IP automatically and the setting for the IP, Sub & Gateway are much different. Now since this IS a router through Comcast, I can most likely call them to have them straighten this out, hopefull. But since you seem kowledgable on this, I'd like to beter understand "what" is going on and "what" might have caused this.
I have other Techy questions to blow my nickles on too and bore you to death. Just let me kow when you've had enough and I wont bug you any more.
Driver was WAY out of date and the autoupdate never seemed to reach out beyond the computer to find a new one. I finally found one and downloaded it. I pointed it towards the NEW driver for the Realtek NIC and now we'll see the next time I crank it up. |
